We looked at the different meals in Ghana which are quite similar to ours in Nigeria last week but left out the dessert. Here are two of them. They are quite easy to try out. Why not do so this weekend? It is very likely your family would love the change.

Tatare
Ingredients:
Plantain
Flour
Onions
Ginger (a little)
Vegetable oil

Method
The plantain must be extremely soft. Remove the seeds and pound in a mortar. Add flour. Grind onion and a little ginger until very smooth. Mix them with the plantain. Add some water. It could be deep-fried to form a round shape or fried like pan-cake to form kakoro. Eat alone or with beans. With beans, it is a very good lunch.

Kelewele
Ingredients:
Plantain
Pepper
Ginger (a little)
Salt to taste
Vegetable oil

Method
The plantain should be a little soft. Cut the plantain into pieces as if it is for dodo or chips. Grind the pepper with a little ginger and salt. Pour everything on the plantain pieces and deep-fry. The ground ingredients give a different and very refreshing flavour.

Next time you are frying plantain for your family, make it kelewele, the Ghanaian style. It really promises to be a better nourishing option.
