Musical performances by some of Nigeria’s top artistes
such as Lagbaja, Yinka Davies and Seun top artistes Kuti were
the major highlights of the golden jubilee anniversary of
the Lycée Français Louis Pasteur/ Alliance Francaise,
Lagos.
The performances which were part of the opening and closing
ceremonies at Oceanview, Victoria Island, Lagos were also
the highpoints of the week-long celebration.
Opening with an anniversary cocktail party hosted by Mr. Jean-Claude
JACQ, Secretary General of Foundation Alliance Française,
Paris, the first day of the event also featured musical and
dance performances by Afro pop sensation, Yinka Davies together
with Seun Kuti of the legendary Egypt 80’ Band and Crown
Troupe of Africa. Davies added colour to the event with unscheduled
performances with Fatai Rolling Dollar and Orlando Julius.
Other events listed the celebration include Alliance Francaise
open day and an exhibition of 50 Nigerian artists under the
theme - Dialogue between Cultures at the National Museun,
Onikan, Lagos.
As if it were saving the best for the last, memories of the
final day of the celebration which held inside the huge event
tent at Oceanview Restaurant, V/I would linger in the minds
of many. For about two hours, self-styled Africano music ambassador,
Lagbaja put most of the audience on their feet for the most
part of his performance.
Some of the members of the audience include friends of the
Alliance Francaise and personalities including Lagos State
First Lady, Chief (Mrs) Sarah Sosan, popular industrialist,
Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas, Ambassdor Ogunsulire, Pascal Meyer,
President, Lycée Français Louis Pasteur and
Philipe Liberton, Head, Alliance France, Lagos.
Dressed in his trademark masquerade costume, the Saxophone-wielding
musician deployed stagecraft right from the start. His entry
from behind the hall instantly generated commotion as many
struggled with their handle and cameras to get the better
of the masked one. Showing a good understanding perform art,
Lagbaja who belched brilliant solos combined effectively with
his band while also exchanging banters with the audience.
For two hours non stop, the musician captivated the audience
with some of his popular tunes including Never Far Away, Skentele,
Surulere, Nothing For You and his new hit, Sobolation among
others. Ijodee Dance Company led by Dayo Liadi also added
colours to the evening when they had an unscheduled performance
with Lagbaja.
Earlier, fast rising musician, Fadabasi serenaded the audience
with his guitar aside churning out some of his songs which
include the popular hit song, Abasi Ayaya. The song had become
very popular since it was endorsed for Diamond-Bank TV advert.
Fadabasi who also paid tribute to the organizers is a beneficiary
of cultural exchange between Nigeria and France.
While speaking on the impact of Lycée Français
Louis Pasteur, Chief Okoya recalled that before the school
was founded in Nigeria, he was among the privileged few who
had gone to the headquarters of the organization in Paris
to learn the French Language.
Philipe Liberton described the anniversary as a celebration
of 50 years of solid relationship with the Nigerian people
as well as a robust cultural exchange between both countries.
