“I am deeply upset by what I see daily: the brutality,
the violence, the beastly disposition of those that hold children
future to ransom. I intend to lay bare the senseless and unwarranted
attack against these defenseless children and the misery of
life which majority are consigned to.
This effort has only one goal, which is to steer the heart
of those concerned to the urgent need for change of attitude
towards these voiceless.”
True to his chagrin, Chris U. Chiagoro bares it all on the
plight of children in his book, Save That Child…Save
Our World.
As an author, who aims at giving expression to children, Chiagoro
arouses desirable sentiments in favour of children, who have
suffered from the injustices being metted out to them in society.
A research reveals that an estimated 11 million of these unfortunate
children die globally from childhood diseases while more than
12 million of the surviving ones live by prostitution.
The book, which is dedicated to God Almighty and Barrister
Chioma Ohiakim, First Lady and wife of the Governor of Imo
State, is the mouthpiece of the vulnerable children of the
world.
The book profers a voice for the voiceless and naive children,
who are daily abused, trafficked, neglected or abandoned.
It is also a roadmap for children on how to secure their tomorrow.
Based on the author’s experiences and regrets, the book
reminds readers, particularly, the youth, on ways of reducing
moral decadence in the society.
It equally offers guidance to young couples on how to raise
good children of high moral rectitude and obedience to the
law of God as well as the laws of the land.
The author regrets that politics in the country and in the
entire sub-Saharan Africa has changed focus from people-oriented
interests to individual aggrandizement. He observes that,
today’s children are facing a bleak tomorrow as they
nudge on the precipice of self destruction due largely to
past and continued neglect.
He is of the opinion that all investments in capital and estates
that people engage in amount to a hollow dream if they refuse
ti invest in the future leaders of the nation.
The book is therefore, a call on the policy makers and leaders
to re-define their priorities and give children a chance as
well as protect their rights.
Presented in five parts, the 235 page-book explains in detail,
things everyone needs to know about children’s upbringing,
welfare and rights.
In part One (Chapter one to six), Education-basic right of
the child, Trafficking in children…modern day slavery,
Babies sold over the counter…like chocolates, Child
witch…many are buried alive, Child prostitution are
discussed.
Child abuse, Cultism-the dream killer, tenage Crime…The
tragic reality of today and TV: dessiminates violence are
expounded in Part Two made up of Chapter seven to 10.
Part Three which comprises, Chapters 11 to 15 celebrates mothers
as angels on earth. Here, parents are urged to expose their
children to the knowledge of God as early as possible. He
enjoins parents to love and discipline their children. He
noted that every parent desires well behaved, cultivated and
God-fearing children. And for them to achieve this, they need
to understand how to save compulsorily to build up capital
for short and long time investments in order to avoid setbacks
and failures.
While Part Four (Chapters 16 to 19) exposes HIV/AIDS scourge,
drug trafficking and abuse, Financial literacy…antidote
to poverty and Mother’s milk…the wonder drug,
Part Five, comprising Chapters 20 and 21 raises the issues
of leadership, service and Tributes to friends of the children.
The author dedicates the last chapter to appreciate men and
women of goodwill, international agencies, humanitarian groups
churches and banks, who have over the years given their money,
time, talent and love to children all over the world especially
in Nigeria.
In conclusion, the author lays emphasis on the child rights
act including other useful information that everyone needs
to know about the upbringing of a child.
Save That Child is a call on all and sundry to rise to the
occasion and save every child in the neighbourhood and in
line with the words of Mike Awoyinfa, Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief
of The SUN Newspapers who wrote the foreword of the book,
“ collectively, we must engender a worthy future for
our young people. The author has played his part by writing
this book. What of you? Join the vanguard of people who have
a special place in their hearts for children today, and contribute
your quota in the preservation of the future of the world.”
A didatic, thought provokingbook, Save That Child also has
the potential of solving problems for the children. It is
a well researched book for future researchers. From the glossy
cover, beautiful children stare innocently at the reader to
remind him or her about other children in the world and the
need for them to be loved and cared for. The entire book has
only one important photograph of Mother Teresa of Calcutta,
carrying a child.
