Beginning from today across six regions, hip hop stars Ruggedman,
Weird MC and premier winners of Star Quest KC Presh are teaming
up with two prominent music producers cum multi-instrumentalists
to select 36 budding musicians that would make Star Fameland
in this year’s edition of Star Quest, the popular music
talent hunt show sponsored by Star lager beer.
Over 12,000 applications were received as entry closed last
Monday and 4,300 have been pre-selected to participate at
the regional screenings in Jos, Abuja, Owerri, Benin, Lagos
and Enugu.
36 finalists are expected to emerge from these regional screenings
to begin their quest at Star Fame land. The show is already
generating a lot of excitement as it enters the crucial stages
of selection of possible band members.
According to Sampson Oloche, Senior Brand Manager, Star, the
building momentum means Nigerians are favourably disposed
to the programme which is in its fourth season.
The quest is to create the hottest musical band in Nigeria
with the participation of the general public. Entry into the
competition is free as usual but is this time limited to individuals
between the ages of 21-30 years. Applicants must posses demonstrable
proficiency in at least one vital area of music; instrumentation,
vocals, or song writing.
As usual, the contestants will form bands on their own from
their interaction with each other. Six bands will emerge from
this process with each band made up of individuals with different
musical skills. These six bands will be expected to create
and produce their own original music on which basis they will
be evaluated by the viewing public.
The six bands will contest against each other and three bands
will be eliminated in the first round. This will be fully
broadcast on national television and elimination will be decided
by public voting via SMS. The three remaining bands will move
on to the national final, which will be broadcast live on
NTA and AIT networks on Saturday, May 10, 2008. The winning
band will again be decided by live public voting via SMS.
Star Quest, launched in 2002, appears to be getting bigger
and better every year thereby generating increasing interest
in it. This year, the programme is poised to raise the bar
and increase the stakes as the winning band would go home
with a whooping N5 million recording contract, N2.1 million
cash prize. A mini van and one year guaranteed accommodation
in Lagos. In addition, the winning band will feature in this
year’s editions of Star Trek and Star Mega Jam
