The Nestle Nutrition Institute Africa (NNIA) in collaboration
with the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives
(NANNM) recently organised a forum designed to enhance better
nutrition. The grand finale of the event was a nutrition contest
for nurses.
Held at the All Season’s Plaza, Agidingbi, Ikeja, the
occasion attracted nurses, midwives and others in the business
of care-giving. Supporters and colleagues of the finalists
also packed the venue to watch and learn about nutrition,
while lending their moral support.
Speaking at the event, the president of NANNM, Mr Olusegun
Balogun, described nurses as primary caregivers. He explained
that the knowledge of proper nutrition must be attained by
every individual in the health and medical sector, so as to
help solve the nutrition problems being faced by Nigerians.
In his address, Managing Director, Nestle Nigeria PLC, Martin
Woolnough, said that the annual contest was intended to empower
nurses with the knowledge, access and necessary motivation
to promote nutrition and healthy lifestyles. The contest,
he said, was also to acknowledge excellence in nutrition as
well as facilitate communication among nurses in the field.
Salisu Mohammed, a consultant paediatrician at the Lagos State
University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja also gave
an enlightening lecture on the topic of the event, The role
of nutrition intervention on immunity in infancy and childhood.
Fifty-one nurses entered for the nutrition competition. The
short-listed contestants who scaled through were tested on
the role of nutrition intervention on immunity in infancy
and childhood. The judges were seasoned health professionals
who have acquired years of experience and have distinguished
themselves in the health sector. The Chief Judge, Mrs Oluwatoyin
Adams, of the Federal Ministry of Health, Lagos State, admitted
that it was a tedious exercise in selecting the finalists.
The participants were drawn from several public and private
hospitals. Questions not answered by the contestants were
posed at the audience, and a gift was awarded to the one that
eventually supplies the answer. The participants and their
supporters turned the competition into a lively, joyful event.
Oderinde Onadipe of Orile Primary Health Centre, Surulere
Local Government Area, emerged the winner and was presented
a desktop computer with a printer, a plaque, a reference nutrition
textbook and a certificate of participation by Iquo Ukoh,
the Consumer Maximization Manager, Nestle Nigeria.
The first runner-up, Didie-Monyei of Duro Soleye Hospital,
Ikeja, Lagos State and second runner-up, Abosede Fagoyinbo
of Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State each went
home with a desktop computer, a plaque, reference nutrition
textbook and a certificate. Consolation prizes and certificates
were still given to the nurses who entered for the competition.
Hospitals of the three winners were given medical equipment.
Monyei couldn’t hide her excitement as she spoke with
Daily Sun. “I’m elated. This
is my second attempt. I came 4th in the regional competition
in Delta State. I thank God.”
The champion, Oderinde Onadipe, was full of thanks to God
and Nestlé for making her dreams come true.
Ukoh informed that the nutrition contest would from next year
assume a nationwide dimension as all nurses all over the federation
would be given the opportunity to contest.
