Last Thursday was one of the finest moments for the Lagos State police command, as they dealt a deadly blow on a robbery gang that stormed a commercial bank in the Dopemu area of the city.

It was a sweet victory for Mohammed Abubakar, the out-going commissioner of police, who was already making what could be regarded as a valedictory speech during a press briefing to acquaint journalists with the command’s achievements in the last one month.

At the end of the gun duel with the bandits, which lasted for more than one hour, four of the robbers were felled by police bullets, while six of them were arrested.
Excited Abubakar, who later spoke to newsmen about the successful operation, commended his men’s gallantry even as he explained that their names would be sent to Abuja for possible reward.

The hefty gang leader, who was smoked out from a water tank where he hid, was said to have been the one giving orders to members of his gang as he shot sporadically to ward off any possible reprisal attack.
Daily Sun gathered that he is cooperating with the police in their investigations.
Police said they would leave no stone unturned to arrest other members of the gang who escaped during the encounter with the police.

According to police source the arrest of some of the robbers is yielding results as they have led policemen to some of their hideouts, where more arms and ammunition were recovered and more of the members arrested.
The police, however, appealed to members of the public to give them information that could help to arrest the fleeing robbers.
