Policemen from Apapa Division Lagos have smashed armed robbery gang that specialized in using commercial bus to operate.Their arrest was made possible by the assistance of some commercial motorcyclists who gave them a hot chase before one of them was arrested.

A suspected member of the gang, who identified himself as Tope Omojola, was nabbed and a gun and four cartridges recovered from him.

The gang allegedly engaged the police in a gun duel at the Beach land estate, along Oshodi-Apapa road, during which Omojola was shot in the leg before he was arrested.

A police source disclosed that Omojola and members of his gang were seen at Marine Beach, Apapa by commercial motorcyclists, robbing some passengers in a Volkswagen LT 28 mini-bus marked XM 188 LSD.
Other members of the gang were said to have taken to their heels, abandoning the vehicle, gun and their wounded member.

Meanwhile, Omojola, a resident of Ajegunle, has denied the robbery allegation, saying he was only the conductor of the vehicle. About the gun found in their possession, he said: “I don’t know anything about this gun. The police saw it in our vehicle. I’m not the owner. Maybe, the driver will know better about it. He has run away, but I will help the police to arrest him.”

He claimed the motorcyclists were only chasing them because the driver hit somebody and refused to stop. He said: “It’s just a matter of hit-and-run. I told the driver to stop but he refused. Now, see what he has caused. I don’t know why he refused to stop.”
