The Benue State House of Assembly recently enacted a law Local/Illicit Gin Prohibition Law, 2009, wherein the production, transportation, distribution, possession and consumption of Ogogoro were prohibited. The law automatically made indulgence in Ogogoro a serious criminal offence.

This sensitization campaign is part of the agency’s regulatory measure, aimed at complementing the drastic action taken by the state government to address the illicit production and consumption of Ogogoro.
The enactment of this law has demonstrated the commitment of the Benue State Government to the welfare of the people of this great state.

The campaigns are targeted at vulnerable groups such as students in primary, secondary and tertiary institution; traders in market places, drivers, okada riders, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, pregnant women and nursing mothers as well as employees in workplaces.
NAFDAC has also carried out enforcement activities on producers and sellers of Ogogoro in several states including Gombe, Taraba and Benue states.

In Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, NAFDAC enforcement officers confiscated large quantities of Ogogoro valued at over one hundred thousand naira on 18th March, 2004. The consignments were confiscated at Komta and Pokolin in Billiri town. The offenders were arrested and subjected to appropriate sanctions.
According to a source at NAFDAC, “Our team of officers in Taraba State also carried out enforcement activities on 20th February, 2008 following a complaint by Jen Community Development Association that Ogogoro production, sale and consumption was taking a toll on human resources in the community.

“Two thousand and fifty litres (2,050L) of Ogogoro were confiscated and the suspects were arrested and sanctioned appropriately.
Only two days ago, on 17th November, 2009, two suspects were arrested in separate locations in Benue State for producing and selling Ogogoro.
“Hundreds of litres of Ogogoro, seven empty drums, ten empty 50L jerry cans and a hose used in dispensing the drink were recovered from one of the suspects. Also fifty litres (50L) of Ogogoro, 56 small packs of the drink commonly referred to as recharge card, ten empty drums and three empty 50L jerry cans were recovered from the other suspect.

“Surveillance is ongoing in several communities in the state and more seizures and arrests are imminent
“The collaboration between NAFDAC, the Benue State government and Who Is Who Initiative International will strengthen our capacity to take the campaign on the dangers associated with consumption of Ogogoro to the nooks and crannies of Benue State. It will also improve the enforcement of the provisions of Local/Illicit Gin Prohibition Law, 2009 which are in line with the NAFDAC mandate.
“We urge all citizens to be vigilante and report all illegal manufacturing and sale of Ogogoro to the nearest NAFDAC office, local government secretariat or Police station, the source said.
