The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, has reiterated his commitment to the restoration of the integrity of the driver’s licence through a collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Chidoka said this while delivering a goodwill message at the 2nd AML/CFT Compliance Stakeholders Submit organized by the EFCC at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. While congratulating the crime commission for creating adequate consciousness among Nigerians on issues of corruption, the Corps Marshal stressed that if the tempo was sustained, Nigeria would soon become a corrupt-free nation.

Chidoka, who explained the relationship between the FRSC and EFCC, emphasized that driver’s Licence Worldwide is a major form of national identity acceptable both in business and social circles. Thus he said, if allowed to become corrupted as Nigeria experienced with the system in the past through forgery and parallel production centres, it is capable of distorting our national records and eroding citizens’ confidence in the nation.

It is to avert such ugly development the Corps Marshal said that the Commission entered into partnership with the anti-corruption body to ensure that the system was made free of such malpractices, so that its integrity could be restored.

Chidoka further stressed that the newly designed driver’s licence with added security features would soon be launched, while its validity can be ascertained online through internet facilities available at the embassies, ports and banks. In the same vein, there would be hand-held fake detecting devices available to patrolmen on duty nationwide. He, therefore, called on the people to avail themselves of the opportunity of ascertaining the validity of their driver’s licences as soon as the facilities are put in place.

While answering reporters’ questions later, the Corps Marshal emphasized that with the measures being put in place by the Commission, cases of forgery and parallel production identified with the past system in the past would be adequately dealt with, while the syndicates and the fraudulent consultants conniving with them would be out of business.

He assured the nation that with efficient licensing system and certification of the driving schools currently being embarked upon by the Commission, the national desire for accident-free roads would be attainable, while the Commission will be better positioned towards contributing its quota to the realization of the nation’s vision 2020.
The two-day summit had in attendance, all stakeholders from business and anti-corruption related agencies.
