As the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) sticks to its position
never to order its striking members back to the classroom
until the Federal Government issues a circular on the disputed
Teachers Salary Structure (TSS), the National Common Entrance
Examination earlier scheduled for tomorrow has become the
latest victim of the lingering impasse.
National Examination Council (NECO), which conducts the examination
for entry into the 102 federal government colleges across
the country announced in Abuja on Thursday that prevailing
situation had made it necessary for the examination to be
put off until further notice.
The postponement of the examination was coming barely 24 hours
after the NUT had voted to continue with its strike until
further notice.
NECO had earlier suspended its Senior Secondary Certificate
Examination (SSCE) which was already underway before it was
halted by the on-going strike. No new dates have been announced
for the conclusion of the examination.
Registrar of the examination body, Prof. Promise Okpala, told
journalists in Abuja that a new date would be announced for
the rescheduled examination. He said, however, that intending
candidates who are yet to register for the examination could
still do so online.
On the suspended SSCE, Okpala allayed fears that candidates
might be taken unawares, and said students will be given sufficient
time to prepare for the examination when situation normalizes.
