Former Super Eagles and Everton of England striker, Daniel
Amokachi, has lambasted the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), accusing them
of giving preferential treatment to foreign coaches.
Amokachi, while fielding
questions on Brila FM, accused the NFA of treating the local coaches unfairly,
but said one thing they fail to realise was that they (local coaches) were the
future of Nigerian Football. He said it was disheartening to observe the way the
football house treat foreign coaches as tin gods, while treating their local counterparts
with disdain. "We have paid our dues in this business, both as players
and as coaches.
We played football to the highest level and as coaches,
we have also made our marks both at the local and international scene. Look at
what Siasia did with the Under-20 team, both on the African continent and at the
world stage. I mean, we should be treated like our contemporaries. "The
NFA treat foreign coaches as tin gods, even when those foreign coaches are not
better than our local coaches. And I believe the earlier they stop this discrimination,
the better it would be for our football.
"The country is still enjoying
the honour we brought to her as players. Our era is still being referred to as
the golden era of Nigerian football."
Meanwhile, Amokachi has welcomed
the concept of having local-based Super Eagles, but expressed fears over the actualisation
of the dream, since the man at the helm of affairs is not resident in the country.
He said the idea is very good and a welcomed one since it has been what Nigerians
have been clamouring for.
"The concept of having local based-Eagles
is noble. This is what our people have been yearning for over the years.
"However,
my fears are whether it would succeed since Berti Vorgts, who calls the shot at
the national team does not reside in the country. "With this scenario,
I wonder if he would be disposed to fish out the talents that are bound in our
local league in order to transform them into stars," he said. |
