Udinese midfielder Christian Obodo has withdrawn from the Nigeria squad for next month's friendly against Austria, and a quick-fire series of World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifiers in June.

The 23-year old midfielder is in Spain recuperating from a second surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament which has kept him out of action for over a year and he told KickOffNigeria.com that he would not be fully fit for the games.
"I can't make it for the matches," Obodo said on Wednesday. "I am still recovering from injury and I need to be fully fit before I can play.

I am going to call the coaches and inform them. But as soon as I am fit
"I appreciate the fact that the coaches appreciate my qualities and want me in the team, but I have a programme that my physiotherapist has set for me, and I can’t start playing until he tells me to.
"I am going to call the coaches and inform them. But as soon as I am fit, I am always ready to be available to serve my country whenever I am called up."

It is not clear if coach Amodu Shuaibu will call up a replacement.
Nigeria play a friendly against Austria in Vienna on May 27 and then host South Africa in a World Cup/African Nations Cup qualifier Abuja on June 1, travel to Freetown to play Sierra Leone on June 7, fly to Malabo to square up with Equatorial Guinea on June 14 and then host Equatorial Guinea in Abuja on June 21.
