Naturally, in Africa, black connotes death and mourning. It symbolizes bereavement, sorrow and depression. In the years gone by, no sane person would ever think of wearing black outfit. In fact, it was abominable for a young lady to wear black ear rings or a black dress. She would be chided by elders, for ignorance because she is not bereaved.

But change, they say, is the only constant thing in life. All that has been swept into the trash can of history.
The table has turned. Now, black is the best. Black has become fashionable and glamorous. As a matter of fact, it is the most sought after colour. No woman wants to be caught dead without a black dress. It has become a staple colour.

Everywhere you turn, at social events, churches, schools and casual outing, black reigns. Women are decked in gorgeous little black dresses. Black jeans, pants, shirts and tops are most desirable.

And so it was at the recent City People’s fashion awards, it was a black affair. While some broke the monotony of black, others appeared in all black. Whatever your choice, black still reigns.
