The House of Representatives has expressed delight at the
steps taken by Celtel Nigeria to improve on the quality of
its service nationwide.
According to the House Committee on Communication, Celtel
is responding positively to the call for improved quality
of service by the National Assembly and the general public,
adding the news is “more gratifying and pleasant to
the ears of Celtel teaming customers” urging the company
not to rest on its oars.
The Chairman, House Committee on Communication, Honourable
Jerry Manwe, who spoke at the commissioning of Celtel Switch
in Kaduna commended Celtel for showing “marked improvement”
since the call for better quality of service was made.
The lawmaker who along with his colleagues in the House of
Representatives has led the crusade for improvement in service
described the event as “a very special occasion”
as the effort will lead to better service quality, urging
the company not to rest on its oars.
The newly commissioned switch will enable Celtel to transmit
more calls and SMS traffic, helping the company to achieve
improved quality of service and deliver to its customers a
better communication experience.
In his words, “It is gratifying to make a note of all
the initiatives outlined by Celtel to meet the expectations
of its customers. We expect that the commissioning of the
new switch will greatly enhance Celtel operations in this
part of the country.
“We note with appreciation the steps taken by Celtel
in the past and at present to improve on your service quality,
the introduction of ultra low cost handsets and the lowering
of the cost of SIM cards and call rates, are quite commendable”.
The House Committee on Communication chairman was accompanied
to the occasion by the principal members of the Committee
including the Chairman, House sub Committee on GSM, Honourable
Chinyere Igwe; Chairman and House sub-Committee on Rural Telephony,
Offor Chukwuegbo, as well as the Representative, representing
Kaduna South in the Federal House of Representatives, Honourable
Mustapha Sanni Haliru.
Celtel key officials present at the ceremony included the
Chief Executive, Bayo Ligali, General Manager , North West
region, Dele Folunrunsho, Director, Regulatory Affairs, Ogugua
Chioke, and Head Corporate Communication, Emeka Oparah , among
others.
Explaining why the National Assembly has had to exert a lot
of pressure on GSM operators in recent months, Manwe explained
that the action was intended to push the networks to deliver
the level of service quality demanded by Nigerians.
He, however, added that despite the unrelenting pressure being
mounted on the operators by the lawmakers to deliver better
quality of service, it was not unaware of the numerous problems
faced by GSM operators in the country.
He then expressed the desire of the National Assembly to support
the companies to combat the problems both in the short and
long terms.
Celtel’s Chief Executive, Bayo Ligali, said the commissioning
of the switch is a vital statement about Celtel’s unshakeable
commitment to providing solution to the quality of service
challenges in the industry and living up to its brand philosophy
of making Life better for Nigerians.
The $6 billion switch, he said, will complement Celtel’s
other numerous projects designed to provide the company increased
transmission capacity, network monitoring, radio capacity,
lowered downtime and ultimately, superior quality of service
nationally.
