Pastor (Mrs.) Beatrice Oguntobi of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Province 2, is the coordinator of the church’s widows programme. Her department, the Tabitha Fellowship, takes care and counsels widows in the province. Recently, she was sighted at the BDPF International Conference held at Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

She takes you through the survival period recalling how she did all kinds of petty things to fend for her children when she lost her husband. Today, she has conquered the odds.

My husband
My husband is Julius Kehinde Oguntobi. He was the purchasing officer at the University of Ilorin. He had cancer of the lungs and died on May 19, 1996. He had been sick for a long time. I thank God because before I lost my husband I did not sit and start depending on him to cater for all my needs. I tried all what God laid in my heart to do in term of businesses.

I sold rice and with the little things I was selling, I was able to raise my children, five of them are graduates today. The word of God says; looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of your faith, he will not let you down. I trusted in him and I thank God I have not looked back. God will continue to make me stand. My household and I are for signs and wonders.

Advice to widows
The family altar is very important. God will help us train our children in the fear of the lord and when they grow they will not depart from it. Let the widows be hardworking and as many as God has blessed to help the widows should do so and God will bless them abundantly.

Ask God almighty who is our husband and father of the fatherless to help you and he will see your family through all the trying period. The hand that scatters doesn’t lack. Don’t hold to your money because of worldly things like buying cars for women who will not remember them when things go wrong. It is better to lay a good foundation for the underprivileged and God will lift you up.

Women should not be lazy. The arms of flesh would fail; it is advisable to learn some skills. Today, I am computer literate, I had to go and enroll in a computer school to keep myself going. I want to start encouraging the widows to learn things like this for women development. Widows could sell small, small things, starting from pure water (sachet) is not a bad idea. All they need is go on their knees and seek God’s intervention that they don’t want to beg. People will come to their rescue, if they trust in Him.
Society

The Bible says whenever you put smiles on the face of a widow, God almighty will bless you. Let us arise and shine, let us help widows, some of the children of widows are really suffering. I want to encourage them and teach them something to do. As a co-coordinator, I know where the shoe is pinching them most. I am a widow, but I thank God that He has raised me up to put smiles on the faces of other widows.
