Nsidem A. Roberts, is not only an adventurer, she is a woman of substance and a prudent mother. Worried by the daily disturbing statistics of death and injuries arising from road accident, she traveled widely in search of the solution to drowsiness and sleep while driving, which experts have identified to constitute a major cause of carnage on the roads.

Roberts, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, told Daily Sun in an interview, while presenting the device to the nation’s motoring public that most drivers, including those on long distance journeys, faced a common trouble of drowsiness and sleep behind the steering. She said fatigue after much work, was responsible for these problems.

Full of love for humanity and her country, she said she had always observed with keen interests the behaviour of drivers outside the country, to see if they doze while driving, and the secret behind their alertness.

Having travelled to countries like in Europe and the United States of America (USA) amongst others, she said she had always observed the drivers hanging certain device around their ears.
Although she said initially, she did mistake them for earphones, she was able to discover out of curiosity that the same was the solution to the problem she had always dreamt of tackling.
Roberts, who is the Managing Director ( of Tibeco Global Resources Limited, presented the life saving device; Nap Zapper alarm, which has received strong approvals from the road transportation authorities and the wider acceptability from motorists in the country.

While presenting the device to the public, she noted that its importance could not be undermined, when viewed within the context of the present mishaps on the nation’s roads. "The social and economic consequences of accidents on our roads are just too gave for any one of us to treat lightly", she stated.
Stating that her company, like many others in the western world, has traveled far and wide in search of solutions to this menace and discovered this modern life saving treasure, the MD said it was also in use in many other parts of the world.

"The device was developed, tested and is in use in America, Europe and Asia to make drivers stay awake while driving. Everyone has, at one time or the other, experienced drowsiness while driving. Some of us have actually fallen asleep only to be awakened by the baring horn of an oncoming car", she submitted.

She disclosed that a survey carried out in year 2002 by the department of transport, USA, found that over 20 percent of drivers had accident through falling asleep while driving. A staggering 64 percent she added also admitted to nodding off while driving.

Explaining its application Roberts said: "Nap Zapper alarm is an anti-drowsy alarm system designed to raise driver’s awareness of momentary lapses caused by drowsiness and tiredness. Worn behind the right or left ear, it works on the principle of electronic balance. As the driver’s head nods below a present angle, it emits a loud alarm signal alerting the driver to take corrective action: to park and take a break or even take a full nap. By so doing, the driver saves his life, those of the passengers and other road users who may be affected by the situation."

She added that it stimulates the nerve to be at alert, thereby eliminating sleepy feelings. Apart from driving, she said the device is recommended to people such as students, security guards, machine–operators amongst others, who needed to be on full alert while on duty.

The device, Roberts said, has light weight and compact design, graceful, safe and easy to use, adjustable alarm angle, availability of spare parts and no side effect to human beings as some of its features.
Endorsing the device for use by motorists, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive (COMACE) of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, represented at the public presentation by the Corps Commander, Federal Operations, Victor Nwokolo, said the presentation showed a private entrepreneur’s effort to provide safety-enhancing product to further the quest for safer roads.

The presentation also witnessed the presence of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Luxurious Bus owners Association of Nigeria (LUBOAN), Vehicle Inspectorate Office (VIO), amongst other stakeholders on road transportation.
