The reign of terror, unleashed on Abuja road users by loose
kids from the rich and mega-power families in Nigeria, has
finally come to a stop. Thanks to the recent combined effort
of the Federal Roads Service Commission and the Nigeria Police
Force, whose 83 officers and men swooped on the stray game
players, seven of whom are presently battling to be let off
the hook.
Memorial Drive, the street linking vital institutions like
the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the National Ecumenical
Centre, the National Mosque, Yar’adua Centre and Sheraton
Hotel, all within the Central Area District of Abuja, was
the centre-stage for the spoilt kids’ deadly vehicle
racing shows called “the storm”.
As revealed The Sun on September 28, 2009, the bully-boys’
manipulation and misuse of Abuja roads had persisted almost
to an uncontrollable point, presumably due to their parental
“connections”,.
On November 1, 2009, however, men of the FRSC and the Police
“mobilised men and materials for an all-out-operation
against the young boys who always bring in expensive cars
and high-power-bikes to carry out car and bike racing near
National Mosque, Abuja, in the evening. Seven boys were arrested
on the spot and their two vehicles impounded”, said
a report of the joint operation.
Arrogance
“The type and quality of vehicles brought in by these
boys show quite well that none of them comes from poor family.
Even their looks show too well that these boys are children
of the rich and mighty. The kids threatened members of the
Joint Patrol that their parents would deal with them. Do
you know us? Or do you want to know us? We will call in our
parents to move against you people (FRSC and the Nigeria Police)
from the highest level. We shall be back next week in full
force, you will see.
A report obtained from the Police High Commandsaid: “All
efforts will be made to checkmate this arrogant and illegal
act perpetuated by the children of the rich. We will continue
to work seriously to put a stop to this madness. These boys
are sending very wrong and dangerous signals to their peers
out there, which is not good at all”.
Under alcoholic influence
The team leader said the kids “ were found drinking
exotic alcoholic drinks. One of the kids claimed that one
of the participants (whom he refused to disclose the name)
paid him to supply them with exotic alcoholic drinks for celebration
of his birth day at the venue of the car race. So he brought
the drinks and also participated in the race. The drink according
to him is meant to enhance the young boys’ performance
during the race.
“The driver of the vehicle claimed that his father is
one retired Colonel in the Nigerian Army, Bida barracks. Bottles
of different alcoholic drinks were found in the vehicle. Some
of these boys arrested are not up to 23 years while a very
few may be up to 27 years old. They came in black Toyota Camry
with registration number DF 432 ABJ (ABUJA) two doors.”
The Joint Patrol Team called on the parents and guardians
of the boys to join in the present administration’s
war against moral decadence, noting that parents must sacrifice
their time and resources to help in instilling discipline
in our children.
The report said security agents would not be deterred by the
affluence of whichever family the boys came from, and promised
to continue with the joint operations any time the need arises
until sanity is fully restored on Abuja roads “because
if this ugly and disgraceful act of children of the elites
is not checked collectively and quickly, it may lead to total
national disgrace”.
Before they were tamed, however, the delinquents wreaked havoc
on numerous motorists at various levels including maiming
and killing. Just one week before they were brought under
control, three of their fans were said to have been run over
by one of the killer drivers who lost control while trying
to make the eventual three-sixty-degree circle, leaving one
of the victims dead on the spot’
