2007 presidency: Okotie, Egwu, Kalu lead in popularity poll

Rev. Chris Okotie, governors of Ebonyi and Abia states, Dr. Sam Egwu and Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, respectively topped the list of presidential aspirants favoured by Nigerians in the on-going national popularity poll.

At the base of the result of the project put together by the Silverbird Group and the Vanguard newspapers, are Prof Dora Akunyili, Prof Pat Utomi, Generals Ibrahim Babangida and Mohammed Buhari.

Announcing the result of the second phase of the exercise, which began a few months ago, on behalf of the organisers, Chris Konyils said that Okotie scored 31.17 per cent, Egwu 13.38 per cent and Kalu 11.77 per cent. Dr Peter Odili scored 8.76 per cent, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, 8.69 per cent and Mr Donald Duke, 7.27 per cent.

He stated that the six potential aspirants, among the earlier 10, in the opinion poll tagged: “Who do you want to be the next president?” have qualified for the next phase of the exercise, which would feature televised debates, on a day to be announced later.

Speaking further, he stressed that Nigerians nominated 10 people during the first phase of the exercise, held recently in Lagos, adding that both phone one and two of the exercise were conducted electronically via telephone text messages.

He added that Akintola Williams Dellorte audited the votes, before the result was presented to the public.

Those, who were present at Silverbird Group’s Lekki, Lagos, office, where the result was announced, included Guy Murray-Bruce President, Silverbird Entertainment; Johnson Akinyemi, Media and creative adviser, Silverbird; Gbenga Adefaye, Editor, Vanguard newspapers and Flora Archibong, AGM, Advert, Vanguard newspapers.
