National Coordinator, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC),
Chief Gani Adams, has called for an unconditional release
of all the social activists and ethnic militia leaders currently
held in government custody.
Adams, who was recently released from incarceration after
over a year at Kuje Prisons, Abuja, made the call Tuesday
in Lagos during a reception and luncheon held in his honour.
Specifically, he called for the release of the detained leader
of Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF) Alhaji Mujahid Asari
Dokubo, and leader of Movement for the Actualization of the
Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Nwazuruike.
He said: “As a victim of state persecution and unjust
incarceration in the past who has just regained his freedom,
I call for the release of Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo, Chief
Ralph Nwazuruike and other activists still in detention over
several charges against them.
“I Otunba Gani Adams on behalf of the Oodua People’s
Congress hereby call for the unconditional release of these
comrades in the interest of peace and progress of our country.
We need their contributions to move the country forward.”
While expressing gratitude to the human rights community and
other groups and personalities who stood by him during his
travail, he explained that the OPC is a peaceful organization,
contrary to the belief that it is a militia group.
“My principle for fighting for justice and equity for
the masses of our nation should not be misinterpreted as a
violent and fetish means,” he said, adding that “we
are set out not to destroy but to build, not to embarrass
innocent people but to correct wrongdoing.
“Our mission is not to encourage discord but to assuage
it, not to build false hope, but to promote, defend and propagate
the truth, justice and self-determination.”
