Detectives from zone 8 police formation yesterday in Lokoja, the kogi State capital, arrested two members of a syndicate which specializes in destroying cables of GSM service providers and siphoning the fuel meant to power the generators at their mast sites normally located in remote areas .

While parading the two vandals, identified as Danladi Mohammed and Musa Gyang, the Assistant Inspector-General of Polce in charge of zone 8, Tunji Alapini, said the vandals were arrested in the early hours of Thursday by his men following a tip off.

The vandals were caught with 29 jerry cans of 25 litres with 16 of the jerry cans already loaded with diesels which they allegedly siphoned from the tanks supplying the generator which powered the MTN mast located at the heart of a small settlement near Lokoja, known as Zango Daji.

Two other members of the gang were said to have fled on sighting the detectives while a Kencheg AX 100 motor cycle used for the operation was also impounded by the police. The vandals on interrogation confessed to the police that they have been in the business for quite sometime but said the leaders of the syndicate simply identified as Bature and one Sunday, are now at large.

While parading the suspected vandals, Alapini said the activities of the syndicate may be responsible for the often epileptic GSM service experienced in Lokoja and environs in recent times and vowed to fish out other members of the syndicate now at large.

The police boss, however, called on MTN management to come forward to identify the seized commodity so as to enable the police prosecute the vandals. He also called on members of the public to always give useful information to the police so as to rid the society of crimes.
