The Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA) has kicked against the appointment of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo as the United Nations Special Envoy to mediate in the Congo crisis saying he lacked the requisite credentials to merit such responsibility.

UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon, recently announced the appointment of the former president as his special representative on the Congolese crisis, charging him to broker peace between the warring parties in the troubled nation.
But PPA's Deputy National Chairman, South, Lisa Olu Akerele said at the weekend in Umuahia, Abia State, that his party was against the appointment, asserting that the ex-president was not the right candidate for the job.

Akerele who noted that Obasanjo did not possess the right qualities for such a mediating job, said brokering peace was one task Obasanjo could not satisfactorily accomplish.

"Obasanjo messed up his own immediate family, messed up the political party that put him in office for eight years and messed up the economy with startling revelations trailing his eight years in office as president of the country during which many sectors of the economy went into a comatose state”.
The PPA leader, while urging the UN to withdraw the appointment, noted that Congolese rebels had already rejected Obasanjo.

"It is not as if Nigeria lacks people with the right credentials for the job. Nigeria has people like Professors Wole Soyinka, Bola Akinyemi, Ibrahim Gambari, Emeka Anyaoku and many others with the right credentials for the mediatory assignment,” he said.
