No fewer than 50 youths sustained gunshot wounds in an inter communual clash in Igboho, a town in the northern part of Oyo State yesterday.

Youths from two rival communities, headed by two different traditional rulers, were said to have clashed after a man called Ismaila Igaada (a.k.a. Omojomolo) was attacked on Monday at Oba Alepata area by youths in the area for daring to come to their territory.

The fight eventually snowballed into shooting spree which spilled over till yesterday morning.
The state Police Commissioner, Mr Bola Adisa Bolanta, said he had dispatched his men, led by the Area Commander to the scene, but claimed that there was no casualty recorded by press time. He assured that the situation had been put under control.

The Onigboho of Igboho, Oba John Bolarinwa Oyetola reported on the phone that more than 50 of the youths on the Modeke and Obaogo sides had been wounded as a result of the shootings.
Efforts to speak with Oba Alepata of Igboho, Oba Solomon Oyediran Igbaroola II, who rules over the Obaogo community whose youths were alleged to have started the fight were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.

The Onigboho, who reigns over the Omodeke community, accused four youths from the Baago side namely: Baba Sala, Lukman Ibrahim (a.k.a. No tackle), Taju Alomo and Olusola of fomenting the trouble by attacking Omojomolo at the filling station where he had on Monday evening gone to re-fuel his car.
According to the monarch, Ismaila was challenged for daring to come to the filling station.
He escaped, but yesterday when the two groups went after each other, Omojomolo was found and attacked. He was shot.

Appealing to the Oyo State Government, the Onigboho said: “An enquiry should be set up. I called the Police Commissioner and he has responded to the situation. The Area Commander is now here with about 15 mobile policemen. I called the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Matters but his line was off. I learnt he has gone to Abuja. They should please find a lasting solution to this problem because the boys have been shooting since morning,” he appealed.

A source within the town said the genesis of the crisis was “the control of Mafowoku Market. There had been crisis on it in the past, but it was eventually resolved between the two rival communities.
However, Omojomolo was believed to be the person who did not allow the Obaogo of Alepata area to gain control of the market.

People from Owode area would not want the market to function. When they saw him on Monday evening about to buy fuel in their domain, they decided to attack him, but he escaped with his car. The Alepata boys, however, went after Omojomolo this morning (yesterday) and shot him.
Soldiers have taken over the place now. Initially when the soldiers were drafted to the communities, one of them was shot by the rampaging boys. They (the soldiers) had to retreat, but they have come back and peace is gradually returning.

The Police Commissioner in an interview said the situation was under control. “The crisis is under control. The Area Commander is there now with my men.”
