The 2009 Abuja Carnival anchored by Professor Bakare Ojo Rasaki will kick off on November 21. Although currently operating on a zero budget, unlike the previous editions of the fiesta, which attracted huge funding, the management committee has been able to record a long list of ‘firsts’ towards repositioning the carnival as the people’s carnival.

Prof Rasaki disclosed that a memorandum of understanding was signed by the management committee with the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria and the Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA).

In the confirmation document signed by the President of HOFA, Tomi Akingbogun of Hotel Rosebud; tourists, participants and guests coming for the Abuja Carnival will enjoy a 50 percent discount on all their transactions throughout their stay in Abuja for the carnival. “There is no better way to contribute to this worthy cause as hoteliers than this. Besides, I wish to assure you that tourists are going to have value for their money. The Abuja Carnival is a national assignment that requires the support of all,” he said. He assured the management that the forum will ensure that members comply fully with the arrangement which is the first in the history of carnival.

This development, which meant that local and international tourists are going to have a swell time in Abuja is no doubt a worthy boost to the carnival and so has been commended by stakeholders. Some of the best hotels in Abuja who are in support of this arrangement include Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Hotel Rosebud, NICON Luxury Hotel, Top Rank Hotel, Chelsea Hotel, African Safari Hotel, Rockview Hotel, Ibro Hotel, Dennis Hotel, Chida Hotel, Reiz Continental Hotel Chesbury Hotel, Dayspring Hotels and Villa U Hotels among many others.

In another development, the entire carnival route has been adorned in preparation for the carnival. Passers-by around Area 11 through to the Eagle Square, where the President will perform the official opening ceremony are already feeling the presence of heavy stage lights mounted on the streets of Abuja to add beauty to the procession when the carnival eventually kicks off.

Meanwhile, residents of Abuja will have a feel of the Carnival this weekend as a two day Road Show will be staged to test run the equipment and other logistical arrangements already put in place for the carnival.
The road shows will also serve as a means of creating further awareness to prepare residents of Abuja and its environ for the carnival.
