The Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) has said that despite the defection of Governor Ikedi Ohakim to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), it still considers itself as the political party in power in Imo State.
In a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ben Onyechere, the PPA said that until the Supreme Court rules on its case against Governor Ohakim, no other party can claim to own Imo State.
The party said that neither Governor Ohakim nor candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in April 2007 election should claim the state.

The statement said: “It has become very urgent to inform our teeming supporters that the PPA is still in power in Imo until the Supreme Court makes a pronouncement on the suit of the party instituted against Ikedi Ohakim for absconding with our mandate. People are talking about defection, but that is not the case here because anybody can defect. The case here is that of jumping ship, a situation where somebody elopes with something that does not belong to him.

“This clarification has become necessary because the Nigerian people are worried, not just PPA members, about the seeming silence of the matter, between Progressive Peoples Alliance, as plaintiff, and Ikedi Ohakim, Mrs. Ada Okwuonu, INEC, PDP and Attorney General of Federation, as defendants respondents in suit NO-FHC/ABJ/475/2009.

“The mandate of litigation cannot be claimed by Martin Agbaso because he is not PPA, as far as we are concerned. The PPA won the election, just as in the case of Governor Amaechi of Rivers State. The party is fully ready to substitute candidates for the governorship and deputy governorship positions today or whenever the judgment comes. Meanwhile, the case will be coming up in the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday, sNovember 30, 2009 for hearing.

“With regard to the statement credited to Nlemigbo that there is no opposition in Imo, the PDP is the party in opposition because the majority of Imo people have no place in the mercantilist system of cash and carry politics of PDP. The people of Imo, including the majority of elite are nauseated with the deplorable manner of denigrating voices in Imo politics.

“Ohakim was denied ticket in PDP and Orji Uzor Kalu rehabilitated him and gave him a ticket, which God blessed and that to Nlemigbo should be attributed to him and his cohorts. No amount of rigging can bring PDP back to power because people are willing and able to defend their votes this time round.

“PDP has no agenda on how to solve the numerous problems facing Imo State. The poor people in Imo have no say today and this is verifiable, and everybody is afraid because if you talk, they will issue warrant of arrest and hunt you. That is how popular PDP has become in Imo State. Nlemigbo is certainly lonely in his opinion that Ohakim did not defect and that there is no opposition. He deserves to be congratulated.”
