I write to ask for the provision of employment for the youth
of Lagos State to reduce poverty in the society in 2004, statistics
of secondary school leavers (youth) that gain admission into
higher institutions was about 30 per cent while those that
gained admission combined with employment are about 45 per
cent while 55 per cent wondered about and engaged themselves
in all dirty act to earn a living.
The following areas can be considered:
Encouragement of labour oriented industries: This indeed will
help in the long run, if the Lagos state government can formulate
a platform, whereby there will be job opportunities for skilled
labours, semi skilled labour, and the unskilled labour. Furthermore
this will help reduce high crime rate in the society.
Reconstruction of our faulty education system: The educational
system we inherited from our colonial masters emphasizes on
writing, reading, and arithmetic, which equip us to be job
seekers and not job creators.
Entrepreneurial factor: The number of entrepreneur who create
jobs currently are not enough. Therefore, we need the Lagos
State Government to encourage entrepreneurship, which will
equip the youth to be job creators.
Reduction of high cost of education: The exorbitant cost of
education in the state (in the country at large) should be
reduced so as to enable secondary school leavers further their
education. Moreso, this will help reduce crimes in ghettos
and slums.
Sport factor: I commended the Lagos State Government in the
area of sport, but more attention is needed so as to discover
the abundant talent wasting away in the state. Furthermore,
increase in governments and private expenditure will help
to reduce unemployment.
Effective public expenditure: This will surely have an expansionary
effect on the economy; because the more Lagos State Government
invests, more job opportunities will be created. More so,
this will lead to rapid economic growth.
With these, I believe that unemployment in the state will
be drastically reduced if not totally eradicated.
