Julius Aghahowa was among the few lucky survivors who escaped sack by Wigan Athletic. The Latics have announced the release of club captain, Arjan de Zeeuw, and fellow defender, David Unsworth, despite saving them from relegation last weekend.

The announcement comes just days after Unsworth’s crucial penalty against Sheffield United helped the Latics avoid the drop from the Premiership.

Manager Paul Jewell left the club on Monday with his assistant, Chris Hutchings, taking the reigns immediately.
And Hutchings has decided to free De Zeeuw, 37, and Unsworth, 33, as he looks to rebuild the side for next season.

Hutchings was quick to praise the pair after their invaluable contributions to the club.
“Unsy has only been with us for a few months, and he did a brilliant job for us when called upon,” he told the club’s Web site.

“His goal against Sheffield United will live long in the memory and its significance can never be underestimated. I wish him all the best for the future.”

Dutchman, De Zeeuw, made 203 appearances for the club in two stints and Hutchings said: “Arjan has been a wonderful servant to Wigan Athletic, a true leader on and off the field and has been a major player for us in two spells here, and I’ve been privileged to work with him during both.
“He is definitely one of the best professionals I have ever worked with during my time in football and I wish him all the best in the future.”
