Clubs that will fly Nigeria’s flag in the continent
next season have been advised to emulate the fighting spirit
of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba. The Permanent
Secretary in the Ministry of Sports in Bayelsa State, Dr.
Peter Singabele, told Leaguemania at the weekend that any
club hoping to succeed in the continent must go for tutorials
in Enyimba.
He advised Kano Pillars, Heartland, Bayelsa United and Ocean
Boys not to allow themselves to be branded the whipping boys
of the continent when continental football actions resume
next season.
He, however, called on the sponsors of those teams to make
funds avaliable in good time to allow them prepare adequately.
It might interest you to know that Enyimba had won the CAF
Champions League two times and are on the verge of winning
the third tune with a 2–0 win over Cameroon's Sport
Garoua on Sunday in Aba.
Goals from Eze Oturogu and Stephen Worgu on either side of
the break secured the victory, which did not come easy for
the two-time champions.
Coton Sport, mindful of Enyimba’s reputation, were understandably
cautious and defended stoutly, banking on their counter-attacking
proficiency to hit Enyimba.
But their tactics suffered a blow when Oturogu fired Enyimba
in front just before half time. The league's second highest
goal scorer, latched onto a pass inside the box and used his
body to hold onhis marker before driving in a left foot shot
past the goalkeeper.
Going a goal down sparked the visitors to life, and they pushed
forward as the second half kicked off. That proved to be their
undoing, as it allowed competition’s top scorer, Worgu
a chance to take his tally to 11 goals in the campaign.
Worgu was at the end of a breakaway, kept his composure to
bend an exquisite ball past the goalkeeper for Enyimba's second
goal.
The win takes the two–time champions to second position
behind Sudan’s Al Hilal, who drew 0–0 with TP
Mazembe on Saturday.
