Former Super Eagles goals merchant, Barnabas Imienger, has expressed satisfaction with the list of players selected for the African Nations Cup holding in Ghana from January 20, but insists the team still lack character.

Imienger, who is the assistant chief coach of the Lobi Stars of Makurdi while in Owerri for their encounter against Heartland FC, told Daily Sunsport that he was elated with those selected, noting that he was consoled with the level of the players on the list of Coach Berti Vogts.

“The current set of players for the Nations Cup excites me. The only snag I have with the team is that they lack character. When we were in the Eagles, what we had going for us was the desire to excel and that gave us the needed character to go all out to ensure victory.

“We have good players that can hold their own in world football, but they are just not yet the team that many desire to see. However, the usual fighting spirit of the Nigerian team is one that is likely to make the difference.”

He called on the Coach Berti Vogts led Eagles to use the pedigree of Nigeria in African football to the advantage of the team as it is likely to instil fears into the other teams. “We have a bright chance of winning the trophy in Ghana and it would be best for us to make us of our pedigree to our advantage.”

He advised that the players should start fighting from the very blast of the whistle and show that they are good enough for the title. “Our players need to show that they are set to win the trophy from the very blast of the first whstle. I’m sure we can win the title,” he said.
