Governor’s Cup: A Nigerian makes main draw list

As the serve off date of the Oceanic Bank-sponsored 8th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship draw near, Nigerian players have continued to register through the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Top on the list of the local players, who have registered online on the ITF website, is Emmanuel Sunday, who is the only player on the Main Draw List of the tournament, which serves off on October 10 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan. Sunday is ranked No.991.

The other local players, who are mainly on the Alternate List are Shehu Lawal (1156), Destiny Ford Da Silva (1211) and Candy Idoko (1390) and Clifford Enosoregbe (1746).
No Nigerian lady is listed in the Main Draw, but they are packed full in the Alternate List.

The ladies are Fatimah Abinu, Hannak Eke, Ronke Akingbade, London-based Elizabeth Adeyinka Thompson and Ibironke Taiwo, while Beauty Macloed withdrew on October 2.
Meanwhile, the winner of the first leg of the tournament last year, Netherland’s Boy Westerhof, is staging a comeback this year. He was ranked 593 when he played the Governor’s Cup in December, 2007, but he is coming to Nigeria with an improved ranking of 297.

Togolese Komlavi Loglo is also coming with an improved ranking of 741. Others are Australian Andreas Haider-Maurer (342), Ivorian Valentin Sanon (549), Belyaev Ilya of Russia (475), Henril Norfeldt of Sweden (743), Egyptian Motaz Abou El Khair (756), Indian Gajjar Rohan (810) and Alexander Somogyl of Slovakia (542).

In the women’s singles is Zuzana Kucova, who won last year’s tourney’s first leg. She is ranked 246. Zahlavova Sandra, Floria Anna from Italy, Kucova Kristina (246) from Slovakia Klaffner Melanie of Australia (258), German Klaschka Carmen (278), Indian Uberoi Shikha (287) and other.
