Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 20-year old man, Ekene (surname withheld), for allegedly killing his stepmother, one Theresa. Theresa, 54, an accountant with the National Population Commission (NPC), according to the police, was murdered in her home at Umuzocha village, Awka, the state capital.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Echeng Echeng, while parading the accused person at the command headquarters, Amawbia, said that the suspect’s accomplices have also been arrested.Echeng said the suspect arranged with his friends to murder the woman in order to withdraw the sum of N1 million from her bank account.

“Immediately the case was reported, her stepson, Ekenedilichukwu ‘m’, aged 20yrs, who slept in the same house with the deceased was arrested for interrogation.

“He claimed that armed robbers stormed their residence and killed his stepmother. However, after an intelligence-based interrogation, he eventually confessed to the crime and named his accomplices. The suspects – Peter ‘m’ a.k.a Rider, aged 23yrs; Chukwuemeka ‘m’ aged 29yrs and Chisom ‘m’ 22yrs have been arrested. They have all confessed to the crime and disclosed that it was the deceased’s stepson, Ekenedilichukwu, who contracted them to come and kill the deceased to enable them transfer the sum of N1 million from her account, having known her phone password.

“The suspects will soon be charged to court,” The suspect told journalists that he arranged the act out of anger against her stepmother for asking him to vacate the house over a little misunderstanding.
