From Emmanuel Uzor, Abakaliki The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ebonyi State chapter, on Tuesday, called on clerics in the state to desist from politicking and focus on their calling even as it chided an Abakaliki-based cleric over an alleged prophesy ahead of 2019 general election in the state. Vice Chairman of the association, Rev. Stan Nwokolo, while reacting to alleged prophesy by one Evangelist Ephraim Ononye, which has been causing ripples in the state, said it was wrong for clerics to engage in partisan politics and cause confusion in the polity. Nwokolo said God could not direct somebody to cause confusion and disunity in the society. He thus called on clerics to concentrate on the things of God rather than meddling into politics, adding that partisanship reduces credibility of a man of God. Earlier in a communiqué issued at the end of their meeting in Abakaliki, on Tuesday, a group identified as Concerned Non-Indigenes Residents in the state disassociated themselves from the said prophesy. The communiqué, which was read by Prof. Chris Ebigbo, read in parts “We are deeply pained that a non-indigene is the one fomenting trouble in this peaceful state. We wish to use this medium to apologise to Your Excellency on behalf of all non-indigenes resident in Abakaliki for the pains, which the unprovoked and unwarranted vituperations of the recalcitrant cleric may have caused your person and your friendly government.” |
