Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has no preferred presidential candidate for this year’s general elections. The President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, (NBC), Revd Israel Akanji, has said.
He made this known during a media a media chat held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday.
According to him, Nigerians should vote according to their conscience for the candidate of their choice, and not along ethnics or religious lines
Akanji stated that the desire of the Christian body is for a credible leader to emerge, adding that it should be a leader that that has capacity to reposition Nigeria’s economy.
He, however, dismissed the speculation that CAN has endorsed a particular presidential candidate, saying: “People have been encouraged to vote, according to their conscience for people, who will be of great benefits to Nigerians wherever they may come from. We believe that God who has always helped in Nigeria, will help us again.”
Akanji, who commended all the candidates across various political parties for making up their minds to lead the country, adding: “It is wrong to abuse any person, who is making the effort to make Nigeria a better country.
“Such people who are laying down their lives so that our nation can be developed and stable should not be castigated by those who are unwilling to make the kind of sacrifices they are making.”
