Three suicide bombers targeting students’ hostels in the University of Maiduguri have detonated explosives within the campus, killing themselves and injuring three security personnel of the university.
The male Boko Haram bombers had entered the university premises at about 12 midnight on Thursday but were chased away by vigilant security personnel around.
Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, Damian Chukwu confirmed the incident to Daily Sun.
“Three male suicide bombers entered University of Maiduguri premises. They were being chased away by security personnel and others. One of them, in an attempt to enter a female BOT hostel was intercepted by security operatives, but hurriedly detonated IED strapped to his body killing themselves,” he said.
He said the other two bombers detonated their explosives near a Construction site within the hostel premises. The three bombers died and injured three security men, the police chief said. He disclosed that the scenes have been sanitized by a team of policemen from the Explosive Ordinance Departmemt (EOD).
The bomb attack came barely a week after two suicide bombers blew themselves up and injured two security personnel who tried to prevent them from entering the campus.
