• Students mount pressure on FG, govs, want to be involved in policy implementation

Pressures are mounting daily on the federal and state governments to urgently ease off the hardship plaguing the citizens. The latest came from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
NANS told President Bola Tinubu and governors to provide palliatives and education grants to students of tertiary institutions, to cushion the effects of government policies in the face of economic hardship.
NANS National President, Pedro Obi, urged the various levels of government to provide shuttle buses for use of students to commute to their schools. He lamented that the high cost of living has made things difficult for students forcing some to abandon their education:
“In light of the prevailing economic challenges faced by students, we are calling on the government to implement immediate measures aimed at providing palliatives and grants to alleviate the financial strain on the student community.
“The economic impact of the on going challenges has disproportionately affected students, many of whom are navigating increased tuition costs, living expenses, and limited employment opportunities.
“Recognising the pivotal role education plays in national development, it is crucial to ensure that students are not hindered by financial constraints. We appeal to the government to consider the implementation of targeted palliatives and grants specifically tailored to support students during these difficult times.
“This assistance would not only contribute to the well-being of individual students, but also foster a conducive environment for academic excellence.
“We acknowledge the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens and believes that extending support to students is an investment in the nation’s future.
“By providing financial relief, the government can empower students to continue their education without the burden of overwhelming economic challenges.”
He urged government to partner with the leadership of student bodies in implementing the policy: “We encourage open dialogue and collaboration between government officials and student representatives to ensure that any proposed measures effectively address the unique needs of the student community.
“Together, we can navigate these challenging times and build a stronger, more resilient educational system.”
