A 20-year-old commercial driver, Mathew Odunayo, who allegedly raped a 21- year-old woman, was on Monday released on N200, 000 bail on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrate J.A Adegun said the accused should also produce two sureties in like sum, one of who should be a religious leader in Lagos State, while the other surety must own a property within the court’s jurisdiction.

Odunayo, who resides in Irawo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, rape and stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Babaji Ishaku, told the court that the accused committed the offences with two others still at large on Nov. 17, 2016 in Irawo area of Owode Onirin near Ikorodu.

According to him, the accused and others gang-raped the girl while going to work.

“The complainant was on her way to work when she was attacked by the men including the accused before raping her.

“They also collected her phone and her purse.”

Ishaku said the accused was apprehended after the complainant had identified him.

The offences contravened Section 258, 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 258 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

The case was adjourned until April 19 for mention. (NAN)
