The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) has released its list of nominees for the 2022 edition.

Going by the list, South Africa’s feature film, Surviving Gaza and Ghana’s Borga are leading with 14 nominations each. The two films were nominated in 14 different categories out of AMAAs’ 26.

Dr. Shaibu Husseini, on behalf of the AMAA Jury, revealed the nomination list at a media event held in Lagos on Wednesday, September 21 and which had the founder/CEO of AMAA, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe in attendance.

Tanzania’s Tug of War follows closely with 12 nominations while Uganda’s Tembele and Nigeria’s Man of God each picked nominations in nine different categories. Nigeria’s Jolly Roger also followed with nominations in eight categories, while Kunle Afolayan’s Swallow earned nominations in seven categories.

Other top contenders at this year’s AMAA include A Song From The Dark and Angeliena with six nominations each. Ayaanle, Almajiri and Road To My Father’s Compound got nominated in five different categories. Alaise, Money Miss Road and Underbelly earned three nominations each, while Skin Like Mine and Ba Ni had two nominations each.

Speaking, Anyiam-Osigwe revealed that this year’s AMAA would hold in Lagos amid pomp and panache. She further noted that AMAA isn’t a popular voting movie awards, but an award ceremony strategically created to reward and celebrate professionalism in film and filmmaking across all spectrums.
