.As Nigerian fighter wins bronze
The African Muaythai Union (AMU) has bestowed a special award on the Nigerian duo of Samuel Nweke and Jonathan Nnaji for the role they are playing in promoting the sport in Nigeria.
The award was bestowed on the Nigerian officials at the recently concluded African Muaythai championship which took place in Bentira, Morocco. The championship which ran from December 15-17 was one that saw Nigeria’s sole flag bearer, Sadiq Mohammed win a bronze medal.
Daily Sunsports gathered that the African Muaythai Union had during the championship in Morocco held its election. Nnaji was elected into the executive of the African body while Nweke who is the president of Nigeria Muaythai Federation (NMF) was equally admitted into the AMU Exco.
Speaking yesterday on the outing in Morocco, Nnaji said it was good that Nigeria featured in the maiden edition of the AMU championship and returned home with a medal.
“We went to Morocco with only one athlete and he won a bronze. Some other countries came with a large contingent but left Morocco without a medal. This shows that Nigeria will go places in the sport if given the needed support. I’m also happy with the special award given to me and the president of the Nigeria Muaythai Federation, Samuel Nweke by the African body. The award will motivate us to do more for the sport in Nigeria,” Nnaji said.
