Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct the state Central Senatorial District rerun election without further delay.

In the unanimous resolution which emanated from a motion moved by the member representing Onitsha North I Constituency, Chigbo Enwezor, and seconded by Obinna Emenaka, member representing Anambra East Constituency, the House said the immediate conduct of the election has become necessary to give the people of the zone a voice in the Senate.

Enwezor had in the motion pointed out that the people of Anambra Central Senatorial District were neglected following the continued vacancy in their seat at the Senate since the removal of Senator Uche Ekwunife  by the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal in Enugu had, while delivering judgment in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Chief Victor Umeh’s appeal in December 2015, sacked Ekwunife from the Senate and ordered a fresh election for the district.

Also, the court barred the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from presenting a candidate in the rerun election, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the election, Senator Chris Ngige later declined interest in re-contesting following his new portfolio as the minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Enwezor, continuing in his motion, noted that the situation was no longer funny as it was almost two years the  district has been denied a representative at the Red carpet chamber of the National Assembly.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Emenaka stressed the need to conduct the election, noting that matters concerning the state could not be effectively pushed by just two senators in a Senate where every state was represented by three Senators.

After the unanimous support for the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Rita Maduagwu in ruling on the motion, maintained that the conduct of the election should not be a thing of political party as the non-representation of the zone in the Senate was affecting all people of the zone.

Recall that Senator Ngige and Chief Umeh recently disagreed on the issue of conduct of the rerun election, while Ngige held that the rerun election would not be conducted until pending litigations were done with, Chief Umeh, insisted that there was no legal impediment holding the conduct of the election anymore as the Supreme Court judgment of January 10, 2017 had settled all.
