Athletes from Anambra State have raised alarm over the seizure of the medals they won in 2018 during the last National Sports Festival (NSF).

The athletes who were badly treated by the Sports Commission have called on Governor Willie Obiano to intervene in the matter by calling the Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Chief Tony Oli to return their hard earned medals to them.

Speaking to our reporter at the University of Benin training ground, one of the athletes from Nnewi South who was a member of the state contingent to the festival said that the sports commission boss collected all their medals promising that the governor would want to see them and also host them to a reception.

“I’m not happy with the way Anambra State Sports Development Commission had treated us. I went to the 2018 National Sports Festival held in Abuja, most of us won medals after fighting hard for it, and at the end of the event, the commission collected it from us telling us that the governor wanted to see and host us, but surprisingly, more than three months after we haven’t seen or heard anything from the commission.  We don’t know what has happened to our medals, they should return our medals to us because it for us not for the state or the commission.”

“We want the governor to intervene in this matter, most of the states have hosted their athletes but Anambra is yet to. Very soon another Sports Festival will be holding in Edo State and if they continue this way, they stand the chance of losing productive athletes to other states. I know that the commission is doing her best to ensure that Anambra is not left behind in sports competition, but they should tell us the position of things rather than keep us waiting.”
