The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got a shocker yesterday when its 24 governors failed to show up at the headquarters of the ruling party for the meeting scheduled to finalise arrangements for the National Convention.
Consequent upon the governors’ action, the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led NWC postponed, indefinitely, the National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings scheduled for April 24 and 25, respectively.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, in a statement yesterday, said the postponement was due to unexpected developments: “The new dates for the meetings will be communicated in due course,” he said.
However, a source close to the secretariat of the party revealed that the postponement was as a result of the failure of the party leadership to secure the assurance of the governor during the planned meeting on the funds needed to bankroll the Convention.
The source revealed that part of the agenda of the failed meeting was to deliberate on the party’s source of raising fund for its NEC meeting slated for next week in Abuja.
While regretting the boycott by the governors, the source noted: “This is a very worrisome signal from the governors. For the second time they have shunned meeting with NWC.
“You can see that majority of the NWC members arrived for the meeting, but when there was no signal of attendance from any of the 24 governors we closed work.
“The secretariat officially informed all the governors about the meeting and the national chairman also spoke to some of them one-on-one and they admitted receipt of the invitation letters, but today, not even one of them showed up. This is a worrisome development in this party as we enter the critical election preparation year,” the source noted.
