From Molly Kilete, Abuja The Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris, has directed all Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), and police commissioners serving in the northern states to be on the alert over the threats issued by Arewa Youth Forum, to Igbo indigenes to vacate the north on or before October 1. the chief cop says no arrest has been made so far on any member of the group that issued the threat on Tuesday. According to him, the AIGs and state commissioners of police must be vigilant and work round the clock so as not to be taken unawares by the group to carry out their plan. He said police commissioners should not fold their hands to wait for the expiration of the September 30, deadline issued by the group as ultimatum before they go after them. He has equally directed the police heads in the affected states to contain persons or groups that try to prevent anyone from going about his/her legitimate duties. Idris, who gave the warning at a conference with state commissioners of police at the police force headquarters in Abuja, maintained that “no individual has authority to stop any Nigerian from pursuing his or duties that are not against the law in any part of the country.” He said “these are rights that are guaranteed by the constitution and we are not going to allow some of these groups to carry out this threat and these are the issues that we are here to discuss. “I think they gave a deadline, I want all of us to be alert that anybody, individual or any group that attempts to prevent any Nigerian from carrying out his daily activities we have a responsibility to ensure that such people are stopped by all means.”
