Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers yesterday killed a police officer and collected his rifle at Nkpor, along the Onitsha-Awka expressway in Anambra state.
It was gathered that the robbers, numbering about seven, went for a robbery elsewhere and on their way encountered a team of mobile policemen at Nkpor flyover. The robbers allegedly opened fire on the policemen, killing one.
A witness said the shootout between the police and the robbers lasted for some minutes before the robbers took off in their vehicle, with the police pursuing them.
He said the shootout caused pandemonium, as traders at New Spare Parts Market ran for safety.
The incident was the third time this year that armed robbers have killed police officers and collected their rifles in the Nkpor and Ogidi axis of the state.
