Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos, has introduced three postgraduate courses approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The approval to run the postgraduate programmes was given by NUC after AUL graduated two sets of students.

The university, owned by Deeper Life Ministry, is awaiting the result of NUC verification for undergraduate courses.

Vice-chancellor of AUL, Professor Samuel Oye Bandele, who disclosed this in an exclusive interview with The Education Report, said the postgraduate courses include Business Administration, Computer Science and Microbiology.

He explained that AUL has also introduced more undergraduate courses such as Law, Nursing, Architecture, Medical Laboratory Science,  and Public Health. The VC said admission for the courses would start October this year.

The VC explained, however, that the carrying capacity of public and private universities were determined by the NUC and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), while to run a new course requires the approval of the commission.

According to him, AUL is awaiting the outcome of NUC verification of the new courses.

His words: “We cannot think of admitting students without the approval of the NUC and JAMB.”

Prof. Bandele stressed the need for the Federal Government to support private institutions with grants, “since the students from the private institutions are also produced for the larger society.

“The government should not be completely coarse into supporting the private institutions because there will be bad wagon effect. People like free things so when they see that the federal government is now sponsoring private institutions, those with any vision and mission and even fund will start to establish institutions knowing the government will support them.”

In that regard I will like to say the government should be cautious about the TETFund grants.
