New Super Falcons captain, Rita Chikwelu is to lead Nigeria’s attack against Mali, as both teams file out for the group B match of the 10th Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Cameroon today.
Chikwelu, the Umea IK Swedish Damallsvenskan player who replaced injured  former captain, Evelyn Nwabuoku of French club, En Avant de Guingamp is confident the Falcons will begin her title defence on a winning note.
The 28-year old attacking midfielder made her senior national team debut in 2007 at the Fifa Women’s World Cup in China. Chikwelu believes they have everything going for them to win the Africa Women Cup of Nations.
The Super Falcons re-established their dominance of the Africa women’s game when they won their 9th title in Namibia 2014, even as they failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics.
However, the players see the AWCON as an avenue to redeem themselves.  “We are looking forward to playing in the final. With a little bit of hard work we will do more than what we did in Namibia, She stated.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Cameroon Chapter, Wahab Folorunsho Owoade, has assured that his members are ready to give their maximum support to the team so as to enable them have a good run throughout the championship.
Owoade, who also doubles as Vice President of Nigeria in the diaspora in Cameroon and Yoruba leader for Central Region of the Central African country stated that over 100 of his members are on ground to cheer the Nigerian girls as well as welcome both the National and International wings of the Club that will be led by the Club’sa President General, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo to give the team the desired support.
