.Team hits host city today

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo yesterday paid a surprise visit to the Super Eagles training ground at the Abuja National Stadium, even as he charged the team not to disappoint the nation when they host Algeria in Saturday’s crucial Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

The nation’s number two citizen who also visited the Super Falcons in training told the players to go all out for victory insisting that Nigerians want to see them land in Russia for the mundial.

“I commend you for your patriotism and commitment to the cause of fatherland. By going to Zambia to defeat the Zambians on their own ground for the first time, you have shown your determination to conquer your group and qualify for the World Cup.

“I want to assure you that the Government and people of Nigeria are behind you in your quest to qualify for the World Cup. I believe that you will certainly pick the ticket from your group to make it to the World Cup finals,” Osinbajo said.

The Eagles would jet out today to Uyo to continue their build up for the game. The German coach of the team Gernot  Rohr was visibly happy yesterday with the early arrival of the players most of whom were in action for their clubs last weekend.

All the 23 players invited by Rohr were in camp yesterday. Rohr and his assistants put the players through their paces twice yesterday.

The Super Eagles go into Saturday’s match on a four –match winning streak, going back to the summer when they defeated Mali 1-0 in Rouen, France and spanked Luxembourg 3-1 in Luxembourg City. Both were friendly matches.

In September, the Eagles pipped Tanzania 1-0 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, before edging Zambia 2-1 in Ndola at the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race on 9th October.

Manchester City of England’s youthful forward Kelechi Iheanacho scored in all four matches.
