A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, has escaped assassination by the whiskers.

Ikiogha, a former governorship aspirant on the platform of the party in the 2015 governorship election, was said to have been attacked by five gunmen who broke into his house, in Yenagoa, on Monday.

Sources said the suspected assassins, who were armed with AK47 rifles, were able to enter his compound after scaling the high fence of his residence at Nikton Road, Kpansia.

Though Ikiogha was not at home when the gunmen came as he had travelled out of the state since Sunday, the gunmen were said to  have seized his police guard’s rifle, tied him up before breaking into one of the rooms in the building.

One of the domestic staff, who declined to give his name, said the incident had been reported to the Police because the gunmen showed that they meant business.

According to the staff, “After tying up the policeman, the gunmen cut the iron protective device in one of the windows and entered the room. They held one of the domestic servants at gunpoint and ordered him to lead them to the chief’s room. When they got to the room, the only saw the wife. They asked the wife to produce her husband. But the woman insisted he travelled.

“They told her they came for the chief but that since he was not around she should give them all the money in the house. The woman was able to give them some money. They left promising to come back for him again”.

Police sources said that the Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Amba Asuquo, has directed a crack team to launch a manhunt for the gunmen.

Ikiogha in his reactions directed all questions to the Police noting that the matter has been duly reported.
