The Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja will today rule on the disputed governorship election between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Already, tension is mounting among supporters of both parties who have since relocated to Abuja for the judgment slated for 3pm.
According to a letter by the tribunal secretary, besides the counsel to the parties, only two representatives for each of the petitioners and respondents would be allowed into the courtroom.
The petitioner and governorship candidate of the APC, Timipre Sylva is challenging the re-election of Governor Dickson on the ground that the election was marred by violence and electoral irregularities.
But the governor and other respondents including the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are asking the tribunal to dismiss the petition for lack of substance and merit.
During the hearing of the petition, Sylva called witnesses to prove his allegations that the elections was riddled with irregularities.
One of the star witness (PW51) Mr. Emmanuel Ogunseye tendered a DVD which is an electronic generated evidence containing a press conference by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Baritor Kpaghi announcing the cancellation of the governorship election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
However, the respondents objected to the video being played by the tribunal led by Justice Kazeem Alogba.
It took the intervention of both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court for the tribunal to play the video evidence.
On his part, the governor called his witnesses including paramount rulers from Southern Ijaw Local Government Areawho testified to the credibility of the January 9, 2016 governorship election.
They stressed that the polls were free, fair, peaceful, and credible, adding that INEC conducted the elections in total compliance with the Electoral Act 2010.
