Benue state government has called for the quick integration of mental health into general health and social support system around the country, using a right-based approach to quality care services and increased awareness on new policy for Mental Health as well as its implementation.
Commissioner for Health and Human Health in the state, Dr. Cecelia Ojabo who stated this during a rally to mark this year’s World Mental Health Week in Makurdi, the state capital yesterday also advocated for a revisit and facilitation of the passage of mental Health bill.
Ojabo noted that if passed, the Mental Health Bill would provide a legal framework for the establishment and provision of services, protection of persons with mental illness, as well as develop and adopt a National strategic plan for Mental Health service delivery for Nigeria in line with global targets.
While also asserting that neuropsychiatric disorder such as depression, schizophrenia, Dementia, Epilepsy among others were estimated to contribute 62 percent of the global burden of mental disorder, the health Commissioner posited that this year’s theme, “Psychological and Mental Health First Aid” was very apt as it would encourage all and sundry to promote the dignity of persons with metal health conditions.
Ojabo disclosed further that the Benue State Government was currently partnering with Australian Aid and CBM international, founders of Comprehensive Community Mental Health Programme and other relevant bodies to tackle the menace of mental Health illness in the state.
Earlier in a remark, State Director of Public Health, Dr. Joseph Kumba appealed to the government to, as a matter of urgency, make policies that would help enhance and sustain mental health programmes in the State.
Highlight of the event was a walk from the Mr. Biggs Roundabouts to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Square, Makurdi.
