Borno State University has proposed to begin academic session this year with 2500 undergraduates.
Commissioner for Higher Education, Ahmed Jaha, told newsmen yesterday in Maiduguri, Borno State capital that the state government was in the process of appointing a pioneer Vice Chancellor and other management team for the newly established university located in Maiduguri.
“We are hoping that the university will begin academic activities with at least 2500 or 2000 students before the end of the year. Since we got approval from the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) last year, we have embarked on processes of building solid foundation for the take off of the institution,” he disclosed.
He said the state government has a vision of building a world class university to address basic challenges perculiar to the northeast including desertification, adding that the management team will be responsible for the implementation of the academic plan and other regulations of the university.
He said the varsity will start with five faculties namely Arts, science, Education, Social Science, and Management Science. “Already, we have two hostels; male and a female hostels that can accommodate up to 500 students on campus,” he stated.
He also said there was vacancies for up to 2000 students who will be off campus. He said the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) has during its assessment tour of the facilities at the new university, commended the state government for the quality of structure on ground. He said the university when it takes off in summer this year will compete favourably with established states university in the country and complement other existing universities.
