Paul Osuyi, Asaba

The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PD) in Delta State and incumbent governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has been returned as winner of the governorship election conducted last Saturday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Announcing the final results at the end of collation in Asaba on Monday, the state Returning Office of INEC, Prof. Serth, Accra Jaja, said the governor polled a total of 925,274 votes to defeat his closest rival, Great Ogboru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who garnered 215,938 votes.

Jaja who is the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, is presiding over the signing of results by representatives of the participating political parties as at the time of filing this report. He is yet to make a formal declaration, affirming Okowa as the winner of the election.

Giving details of the results, Prof. Jaja said the state had a total of 2,831,205 registered voters, adding that 1,188,784 voters were accredited.

He said a total of 1,178,335 votes were cast during the election, out of which 1,154,188 votes were valid while 24,147 were rejected.

From the collated results, Okowa won clearly in 23 out of the 25 local government areas of the state, leaving Ogboru with just two.

But the state chapter of the APC has rejected the results, calling on INEC to cancel the election and conduct fresh exercise as soon as possible.

The party in a statement by its state Chairman, Jones Erue, alleged that there were over voting, ballot-box snatching, ballot-box stuffing, violence, and other irregularities.

The APC agent at the collation centre also refused to sign the final results.
